Environmental Energy Harvesting Enabled Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have a variety of real world applications, ranging from military, to health care, to environment monitoring and smart cities, etc. In the near future, it is expected that the interconnection with other types of networks, notably in the context of internet of things (IoT), will enable to extend their utilization to a large scale and to provide unique services. One of the biggest challenges that prevent large scale deployment is energy limitation. While most existing network protocols assumes the use of portable and limited batteries, energy harvesting merges as the best alternative to tackle this problem. Environmental resources such as solar energy, electromagnetic power, etc., can be used for this purpose, where the ambient energy is to be converted into electricity to power the sensor nodes. Energy harvesting techniques will contribute for the environment preservation in the future, where green energies.
